Rising Covid cases in UAE: Green Pass validity, mask, travel rules; all you need to know
The recent rise in Covid-19 cases has led authorities to reimpose curbs that had been lifted.
Residents are urged to follow these new Covid-safety rules:
Green Pass
Green pass validity on the Al Hosn app has been reduced from 30 days to 14 days. So, residents that are fully vaccinated will receive a 14-day Green Pass once they test negative.
A green pass is mandatory to access government buildings in the UAE and visit indoor public places in Abu Dhabi.
Mask mandatory indoors
A fine of up to Dh3,000 has been imposed for those who fail to wear a mask indoors. Wearing a mask outdoors still remains optional.
10-day isolation
Regardless of symptoms, all those who test positive for Covid-19 must isolate themselves for 10 days. They are also required to inform their employer.
The Dubai Health Authority has said residents must have the Covid-19 DXB smart app.
Abu Dhabi residents are required to take two Covid-19 PCR tests to end their quarantine period. These tests should be separated by a gap of 24 hours, and both results should be negative.
Travel to UAE
All passengers travelling to UAE must present a valid vaccination certificate of having received both doses. The certificate should also have a QR code.
Those who are not vaccinated must present a valid negative Covid-19 PCR test certificate where the sample has been collected within 48 hours of boarding the flight. A QR code must also be present on the certificate.

New UAE labour law explained: What happens after an unlimited work contract is terminated?
A top legal expert in the UAE has said employers need to provide a ‘legitimate reason’ and conduct a thorough internal investigation before dismissing their employees without a notice period.
If an employer terminates the contract without providing a legitimate reason, in that case, this may be considered ‘arbitrary’. The employer may have to compensate the employee with up to three months’ salary, per the new labour law, explained Judge Dr Ali Muhammad Al Hosani, first appeal judge and head of the technical office of the Labour Court, Dubai Courts.
Al Hosani said the reasons for dismissal include - if an employee submits false documents; fails to follow the employer’s instructions; fails to perform the duties, and reveals the employer's business secrets to third parties.
Employers can also dismiss employees if they are found in drunkenness or under the influence of drugs; commits immoral activities at the workplace; verbally or physically abuse the employer or colleagues; are absent from work for seven consecutive days or 20 non-consecutive days, etc.
On the other hand, an employee may also terminate the contract without notice if the employer does not fulfil the conditions laid down in the employment contract, assaults the employee, or assigns the employee another work without their consent.
If an employer does not serve the notice period to the employee, then monetary compensation is a must, said Al Hosani. Moreover, it is also unlawful to dismiss an employee for filing a complaint against the employer as per the new UAE Labour Law.
Law makes termination of work contracts flexible
Al Hosani said, "The new law gives more flexibility to both parties in terminating the relationship and does not require the completion of the contract term. The law allows them to terminate the relationship by giving two warnings by the law's regulations." He spoke at the second forum for employers, organised by the Labour Standards Development Authority (LSDA) in Sharjah.
Over 300 establishment owners and managers attended the insightful session. Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 on the regulation of labour relations in the private sector came into force on February 2 this year.
According to the UAE government, the law is designed to enhance employment rights and boost the competitiveness of the Emirates as a place to live and work, helping the region attract and retain world-class talent. The new law also makes provision for businesses to put in place part-time and flexible working arrangements.
How important is a written contractual agreement?
It is essential to have a contractual agreement between an employee and employer. Both parties need to know and write down the conditions for employment and termination, said AlHosani. "The foundation of the law is based on trust. Writing down the terms and conditions of the employment helps both parties," he said.
"Sometimes, cases are filed without a labour contract. We hear a lot of such cases in the courtroom. The law is in favour of both employees and the employer. The aim is to achieve a balanced work environment," Al Hosani added.
The legal expert also stated that the wage protection system (WPS) is tampered with in some cases. "There are cases where the salary is deposited via the WPS system and withdrawn from the employee's account in one minute. This is illegal and a clear misuse by employers," he explained.
Here are some critical facets of the new UAE labour law:
— It is illegal to keep the passports of the employees
— Recruitment, visa, work permit, and other legal costs of hiring the employee must be paid for by the employer. Employers cannot cut these costs from the employees' salary
— The company must pay for medical treatment costs and insurance fees
— The experience certificate must be non-biased and must be not written in a manner that would jeopardise future employment options for the employee
— There cannot be a delay in giving salaries
— Employers cannot force employees into doing work they are not comfortable doing
— Employees cannot be forced to work long hours
— Harassment, bullying, and emotional and sexual abuse will not be tolerated in the workplace
— For example, if an employer says 'your value is nothing to me' to an employee, it is considered emotional abuse
— A minimum notice period of 30 days continues. However, a maximum of 90 days' notice period has been introduced
— For employees leaving while still employed on unlimited term contracts, minimum notice periods apply of:
30 days for employees with up to five years' service
60 days for employees with between five- and ten years of service
Ninety days for employees with ten years' service or more.
— Employees summarily dismissed were not entitled to a notice period or end of service gratuity. However, the exhaustive list set out under the Old Labour Law has been maintained, with two further additions:
abusing position to obtain personal gains and profits; and
joining another establishment without complying with controls and procedures in place.
— The additional limitation has been placed on summary dismissal for failure to carry out primary duties – a written investigation and written warnings must be provided before the employee is dismissed
— An inquiry must be conducted before terminating an employee's contract
— Employers must give two warning letters to the employee before termination of employment
— Employers must also provide an apparent reason for dismissal
— An employee cannot be dismissed for consuming alcohol or other substances; however, an employee can be terminated from employment for drinking them during work timings. This includes working from home or while on official video calls
— Cursing or bad-mouthing can be another reason for termination of a work contract
— Employees summarily dismissed lose their entitlement to their notice period; however, now retain their entitlement to an end of service gratuity payment
— Employees with over one year's service continue to be entitled to gratuity, calculated on the same basis as before
— Employees summarily dismissed now retain their entitlement to gratuity, and no reductions apply where an employee resigns.
— Payment of compensation, together with all other termination payments, must be made within 14 days of the termination date.
— Stopping an employee from taking annual leave is not allowed
— Employers cannot terminate the contract of pregnant women

UAE: Traffic cameras to monitor expired vehicle registration from November 7
Ras Al Khaimah police announced that vehicles with expired registration will be monitored by traffic cameras starting from Sunday, November 7.
Cameras activated across Ras Al Khaimah streets will not only flag vehicles with expired registration but also expired licenses and car insurance.
The violators will face Dh500 fines and will receive four black points, according to federal traffic law.
Brigadier Ahmed Al-Sam Al-Naqbi, the Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department, told Khaleej Times that the system is activated at various internal and external roads of the emirate.
He pointed out that drivers and vehicle owners must expedite the renewal of expired licenses to prevent violations and legal procedures.
The Deputy Director of the Electronic Services and Communications Department, Colonel Omar Mohammad Al-Oud Al-Tunaiji, explained that the cameras have a high degree of accuracy and quality that exceeds 95% in monitoring vehicles. They can process and read vehicle number plates dynamically according to the smart reading system.
He added that the digital reading of vehicle plates does not require central processing. The available information is sent through a private network to the central server. The data is subjected to human scrutiny in the last stage to be checked to avoid any technical errors.

UAE: Facemasks are no longer mandatory in certain places
However, people will still need to keep a safe physical distance of two metres
Abu Dhabi: Wearing a facemask will no longer be required to enter certain places in the UAE, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHaP) and National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA) announced on Wednesday.
People will not now need to wear facemasks when exercising in public places and while on private vehicles for residents living in the same house, as well as beachgoers, and while in open swimming pools. This is in addition to people who are alone in closed spaces, or when obtaining personal services for one’s face and head in barbershops and beauty centres, salons, as well as in medical centres and clinics when undergoing diagnostic and treatment services.
Local authorities will also be obligated to put up signs showing the places where facemasks will not be requested.
However, people will still need to keep a safe physical distance of two meters.
The decision was made after the two authorities noticed a significant decline in the number of COVID-19 infections registered in the country, which was the result of the strenuous national efforts made to detect infected cases, and expand the scope of examinations nationwide, in addition to providing different types of vaccines against the 'COVID-19' not to mention the cooperation of the public in implementing precautionary measures in the previous period.
MoHAP and NCEMA called on the public to still wear facemasks in un-exempted places, as all studies confirmed that facemask is one of the most important means of prevention against viruses. They stressed the need to follow precautionary measures set by concerned authorities to ensure the health and safety of all members of society, and to assume social responsibility.

UAE: Children as young as 15 can work under new visa scheme
Earlier, the minister also announced the launch of a 'green visa' and a freelance visa
Students aged 15 and above will soon be allowed to work in the UAE under a temporary visa scheme.
This came as Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Trade, spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the UAE Projects of 50 event, which was held to announce the first set of plans under the initiative.
The new provision for students will allow them to gain some experience, while adding value to the UAE economy.
Earlier, the minister also announced the launch of a 'green visa' and a freelance visa.
Green visas are work permits with residency for pioneers, entrepreneurs and other professionals. Freelance visa will help people work independently.
Green visa holders can sponsor their sons' visas till they turn 25. Usually, sons can be sponsored only till they turn 18.
Green visa holders can also sponsor their parents.
This came as ministers and top officials got together in Dubai to announce the first set of 50 new projects that will usher in the next phase of growth for the country.

UAE: Residents relieved as Abu Dhabi lifts quarantine for vaccinated travellers
From today, travellers who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 are exempt from a 10-day quarantine
Abu Dhabi residents, who previously had to isolate for 10 days and undergo numerous PCR tests, have hailed the Capital’s recent decision to lift quarantine for Covid-vaccinated travellers.
From today, travellers are exempt from quarantine when they arrive in Abu Dhabi if they have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, or if they are travelling from a green list country. Unvaccinated travellers from destinations that are not on the green list must quarantine for 10 days.
Ugandan expat Musa Ekirirweira, who recently returned to Abu Dhabi after a short holiday back home, said the new rule is a huge relief for travellers.
“I am really happy with the new procedures. They are so helpful and will ease life for travellers,” he said.
Though he was fully vaccinated, Ekirirweira said he had to quarantine for 10 days last week when he returned to Abu Dhabi from Uganda, which is not on the green list.
“I have undergone more than three PCR tests since I landed in Abu Dhabi as part of the quarantine process. It’s too much and a bit tiresome,” he said.
The Ugandan national also added that the new measures will likely encourage more members of the community to get vaccinated, especially those wanting to travel back home for holidays.
Amjad Hassan, a Jordanian expat whose wife is returning from Amman next week, said he is happy that his wife — who is fully vaccinated — won’t have to quarantine.
“She was worried she won’t be able to immediately report to her job that requires her physical presence because of the 10-day quarantine,” he said.
Some expats even refrained from travelling, fearing the old quarantine procedure. Such was the case for Pakistani engineer Mohammad Sharif, who said he was unable to travel home to see his ill mother.
“My job requires physical attendance, and I didn’t have many days left on my annual leave to spend back home with my mother and also return here and quarantine for 10 days,” he said. “Now that there is no need to quarantine for vaccinated travellers, I am planning to book a flight and travel home to see my mother as she needs me.”
To be considered fully vaccinated, Etihad Airways noted that passengers must have received two doses of the same Covid-19 vaccine at least 14 days before departure. Before flying to Abu Dhabi, all travellers — vaccinated and unvaccinated — must present a negative PCR test result from within 48 hours of departure.
Unvaccinated passengers, who are travelling from a ‘high-risk’ country, will be required to quarantine for 10 days and wear a medically approved wristband.

UAE is top destination for Indian job seekers, minister says
The Emirates heads a list of countries to which workers and professionals travel for work
The UAE is the leading destination for Indians hunting for jobs overseas.
India’s External Affairs Ministry has released a list of the top five countries to which the highest number of workers and professionals travel for employment.
The UAE is ranked first, followed by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the US and Oman.
This information relates to data from 2016 to 2021 and was presented to the lower house of India's Parliament by V Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs. Detailed figures were not available.
The upcoming Expo 2020 Dubai is set to make the Emirates an even more attractive proposition for those in search of a career path in the country.
Applications have been flooding in from around the globe for positions at the world fair, with applicants vying for operations, planning and communication roles at pavilions and across the site.
Some jobs are to begin as soon as the start of next month, while others will start a week before the doors to the Dubai South site open in October.
Recruitment experts and diplomats have said they are looking for people who can engage with visitors from around the globe.
The Indian expatriate community of more than 3.4 million is the largest in the UAE, with the biggest numbers from Kerala in southern India
The minister was responding to a question about measures taken by the Indian government to assist new job seekers, particularly young people who fall prey to illegal agents in India.
Consular and embassy officials have repeatedly appealed to workers to use eMigrate, an online portal with details of the registered recruiting agents approved by the Indian government.
Although India's government has warned strict action would be taken against agents involved in illegal recruitment within states in India, there have been cases of workers duped into paying large sums of money for low-pay jobs.

A team of enterprising engineers with a thirst to slash plastic waste have developed reusable water bottles that can be folded to fit in a pocket or a purse, or even repurposed for drinking tea.
The trio of Angela Lopez Blanco, 23, from Spain and her Emirati teammates, Amna Al Ali and Ruwayya Al Mehrzi attracted commercial interest for their designs, which aim to shake up the world's drinking habits.
Their project won the Ecothon Innovation Challenge, organised by sustainability specialists Masdar in collaboration with Nestlé, the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development, Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an.
Nestle has already expressed interest in bringing the innovative water bottles to market.
The first design from the group, working under the name Re, was the 'On the Go' bottle that can be easily folded to fit inside a purse or even a pocket.
“We got the idea after interviewing people from different backgrounds and realised that low-income people use a lot of reusable bottles,” said Ms Blanco, an electrical engineering student at the University of Wollongong in Dubai.
She said the primary reason for this may not have been to protect the environment, but the cost of regularly buying new bottles of water.
The team thought of developing a bottle that can be reused and is easy to carry around, to help people save money and the planet.
“This is especially useful for people on the go, like athletes and students; it is foldable and light and has a trendy design,” said Ms Blanco.
The bottle cap is designed to change colour if there is bacteria present in the water.
“Originally it would be transparent, but if the water contains bacteria it changes colour; this is particularly useful during the pandemic when people are concerned about hygiene,” she said.
The bottle is priced at Dh123, which Miss Blanco said was quite reasonable.
“It is a hygienic multi-purpose bottle that can last between two to three years, and the design is catchy.”
This particular bottle caught the attention of Nestle, who are currently discussing producing a prototype.
Their second bottle, Chillax, is not only reusable but can expand in size from 300ml to 500ml.
Their third design, the Afternoon bottle, can be used to drink water and as a tea bag.
“It is made of recycled cardboard and will have tea [leaves] embedded in it, so once your drink the water inside, you can take the outer part of the bottle, put hot water inside and dip the tea leaves in it,” said Ms Blanco.
There are enough tea leaves for two refills.
“It is like an edible bottle.”
With just three members, RE were the smallest team in the competition but they had enough bright ideas to make their mark.
“We were supposed to be 11 members, but then nobody [else] was interested and it became just the three of us,” said Ms Blanco.
“We were given the option to join other teams, but we decided that we could do it on our own, and we won.”
Another project to make the final of the competition is looking to make household recycling a whole lot easier.
Team Waa’i – which means awareness in Arabic - designed an app that can deliver recyclable waste containers to people’s homes.
“People can download the app, enter their location details and we will send them a container to put their plastic and recyclable waste in,” said Mariam Al Maazmi, an employee at the Ministry of Human Resources.
“After some time we pick up the container and deliver it to a waste recycling facility or anyone who is interested in recycling it.
“We would also collaborate with eco-friendly companies to help introduce the project,” said the 24-year-old Emirati.
Ms Al Maazmi and her teammates Ahmed Al Ameri, Farah Ali, Mohammed Al Ameri and Sombul Munshi, came up with the idea after they realised that they all faced the same problem in their daily lives: the lack of an easy solution to recycle household waste.
“We agreed that it was an issue that could be easily solved,” she said.
The team hope to work with environmental authorities in each emirate to launch the app nationwide.

Coronavirus: UAE reports 1,537 Covid-19 cases, 1,518 recoveries, 6 deaths
Over 65.6 million tests have been conducted in the country.
The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Saturday reported 1,537 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 1,518 recoveries and 6 deaths.
The Indian civil aviation regulator on Friday extended the ban on international passenger flights until the midnight of August 31, 2021. However, the ban is not applicable to cargo flights and those approve by the regulator, the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). All scheduled international flights to and from India were banned from March 23, 2020, following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Myanmar's foreign ministry on Saturday further extended the entry restrictions for all travellers to the end of August amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The entry of all travellers, the issuance of all types of visas and visa exemption services will be suspended until August 31, reported Xinhua news agency.
Meanwhile, doctors in the UAE on Friday have urged residents to remain masked even when travelling to countries that have relaxed Covid regulations and protocols. Wearing a mask has been a strict mandate in many countries; a few nations had loosened their rules but have reintroduced it.

Video: Abu Dhabi-Dubai railway tracks take shape
Etihad Rail is the national railway of the UAE.
Construction of a rail line that connects Abu Dhabi and Dubai is in full swing.
Etihad Rail took to Twitter to share a video that shows progress in the track laying process on the line.
Once complete, trains will travel south towards Al Dhafra; and north towards Dubai and the Northern Emirates along this track.
It will connect the emirates’ “key industrial hubs” and cement “the foundations to boost economic and social development across the UAE”, Etihad Rail tweeted.
Khuloud Al Mazrouei, assistant project manager, Etihad Rail, said in the video that the construction is on schedule.
Etihad Rail is the national railway of the UAE.
According to the UAE Government’s official website, the railway will connect all seven emirates and link the other five countries of the GCC: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman.
It will be 1,200km long. In the south, it will run up to the border of Saudi Arabia; and in the east, it will touch Oman, according to information on uae
“It will have several freight terminals, distribution centres and depots located close to major transport hubs, warehouses, and storage facilities across the UAE.
“Etihad Rail commenced commercial activity in January 2016, after it had completed phase one of its network, which spans 264km from Shah and Habshan (the location of gas fields in Abu Dhabi) to the port in Ruwais on the western coast of Abu Dhabi,” the website added.

India-UAE flights: Expats duped by fake travel approvals
The UAE Embassy in India has warned desperate travellers about fraudsters looking to make a quick buck.
If you are a UAE resident stuck in India and desperate to return to your place of work, then watch out for fake flight approval letters being peddled by scamsters posing as UAE Embassy authorities.
The warning comes from a UAE Embassy official in New Delhi after Khaleej Times contacted his office as part of an investigation to find out how conmen were using a phony website (https://www.uaeembassy.in/) to tout approval letters to unsuspecting UAE residents.
The bogus portal went offline not long after Khaleej Times reported it to the relevant UAE authorities. But while it was live until the evening of July 26, it reportedly looked so convincing that those anxious to return to their jobs or be reunited with their families fell for it hook, line and sinker.
The official url of the UAE Embassy in New Delhi is https://www.mofaic.gov.ae/en/missions/new-delhi. However, those who came across the fake website after a Google search for “UAE embassy in India” (see Screenshot 1) noted that the latter clearly looked the part.
Meanwhile, those running the forged site continued to respond to emails and carry out transactions until the time of publishing this story on Tuesday. They did so while impersonating UAE diplomats, as Khaleej Times found out in a confirmation letter this journalist received (see Screenshot 2).
Hundreds of UAE residents currently stranded in India have been desperately exploring ways to get back to the country since flights were suspended on April 24.
Dubai-based healthcare professional Linsy Monse, 40, told Khaleej Times that she paid Rs8,000 (approx. Dh394) for what she believed was an approval letter from the UAE government for her teenage daughter to fly back to Dubai.
The letter had a non-existent “UAE’s Ministry of Interior and Naturalization & Immigration Department (sic)” header gleaming at the top. At the bottom was a purported signature by the Director of Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), along with the authority's hotlines 8005111 and 04-3139999 listed as contact numbers.
A simple Internet search confirmed that these numbers do not, in fact, belong to the unrelated Dubai watchdog body Al Ameen as claimed on the fake letter — but Monse said it was too little, too late.
“I had my doubts only after receiving the letter but, sadly, I had already paid the money and there was no way I was going to get it back,” said Monse, a Dubai resident for two decades, after realising that the letter of approval in her inbox was good enough for a flight to nowhere.
Earlier, when she wrote an email to what she thought was the UAE Embassy in New Delhi in the hopes of getting an approval for her fully vaccinated daughter to fly back, she said she got a response from the “Ambassador’s office” within an hour.
For a mother choked by thoughts of potentially meeting her daughter again after months, it didn’t matter that one email directed her to contact an “agent” on WhatsApp, while a second, written in laboured English (both of which Khaleej Times has seen), warned her to pay the “approval letter fees” within 24 hours.
“All I was thinking about at the time was an end to weeks of separation from my daughter. Who would have thought it was not to be?” rued Monse, who feels she is just one of the scores of victims to have coughed up hundreds of dirhams to fraudsters posing as diplomatic officers with the UAE Embassy.

Coronavirus: UAE reports 1,539 Covid-19 cases, 1,497 recoveries, 2 deaths
The new cases were detected through 296,686 additional tests.
The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Tuesday reported 1,539 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 1,497 recoveries and 2 deaths.
The new cases were detected through 296,686 additional tests.
The total number of cases in UAE as on July 27 are 674,724, while total recoveries stand at 652,180. The death toll now stands at 1,929.
A UAE Embassy official in New Delhi has warned stranded UAE residents stuck in India to watch out for fake flight approval letters being peddled by fraudsters.
The advisory comes in light of conmen using a phony website (https://www.uaeembassy.in/) to tout approval letters to unsuspecting UAE residents.
Many UAE residents stranded in their home countries are increasingly looking at Qatar and Ethiopia as quarantine stopover destinations to return to the UAE.
So far, stranded expats in the Indian subcontinent and other red-list countries, have been flying to Balkan countries, southern Europe, and Russia to spend 14 days there, before hopping on to a flight to the UAE.
However, since July 12, after Qatar announced changes to its travel and quarantine policy, UAE residents have been increasingly looking at the Doha option.
Meanwhile, Singapore is looking to allow quarantine-free travel for those who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 from September, when 80 per cent of the city-state's population should be inoculated, the government said on Monday.

Coronavirus: UAE reports 1,521 Covid-19 cases, 1,474 recoveries, 3 deaths
The new cases were detected through 152,302 additional tests.
The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Friday reported 1,521 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 1,474 recoveries and 3 deaths.
The new cases were detected through 152,302 additional tests.
India on Thursday expressed hope that more countries would take steps to normalise the overseas movement of people from India.
"With the improvement in the Covid-19 situation in India, we have been taking up with foreign countries the issue of easing travel restrictions for Indians," Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said at a media briefing.
In fresh travel bans, the Philippines will ban travellers coming from Malaysia and Thailand, as well as tighten restrictions in the Manila area, in a bid to prevent the spread of the contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, the presidential spokesperson said on Friday (July 23).
The travel restriction will take effect from Sunday and run to the end of July, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said in a national address.
New Zealand will also pause its quarantine-free travel arrangement with Australia for at least eight weeks starting Friday night, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, as Australia fights an outbreak of the highly infectious Delta virus variant.
The "travel bubble" had already been paused for travellers to and from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

UAE jobs amid Covid: Which sectors are hiring
Firms are looking to recruit a contingent workforce to have flexibility in headcount based on business needs.
Sectors such as e-commerce, IT, healthcare, pharma, medical devices, customer service, and financial technology are hiring a highly skilled workforce in the UAE in 2021. This comes as firms recruit a contingent workforce to have flexibility in headcount based on business needs, say human resources executives.
Though hiring is expected to pick up in the second half this year, they believe that the local hiring is unlikely to reach 2019 levels soon.
Sectors hiring during Expo 2020:
>> Hospitality
>> Retail
>> Technology
>> Travel
>> Catering
>> Leisure
"With companies adapting to virtual recruitment and onboarding, there has been a shift from static jobs towards project-based or cross-functional work. Some organisations have started recruiting contingent workforce to have flexibility in headcount based on business needs. Temporary or project-based work may also be more widely accepted by employees looking to re-enter the workforce or venture into a different industry," said Mayank Patel, country head at Adecco Middle East.
Sectors that are hiring:
>> IT
>> Healthcare
>> Fintech
>> E-commerce
>> Customer services
>> Logistics
>> Telecom
>> Medical devices
>> Financial
Job numbers are increasing in the first half of 2021 and Patel expects this trend to continue going forward, with some countries now lifting restrictions and economies coming back to normal. Moreover, the Expo 2020 Dubai will also have a high influx of jobs in the UAE across catering, technology, software, travel and hospitality sectors.
"The demand remains for workers in jobs like construction, delivery, logistics and warehousing and vaccine administration. Many industries like retail, e-commerce, transport and delivery, logistics, information technology, software consulting, financial, fintech, telecommunications, healthcare, pharma, and medical devices have been actively hiring during this time to meet market demands and fulfil essential roles," he added.
The pandemic forced many organisations to fast track the adoption and deployment of new technologies to reduce costs, enhance productivity and stay in the game. Technology-based roles continue to be in high demand as e-Commerce booms and replace the brick-and-mortar experience. Restaurants and food delivery platforms have emerged and strengthened as many people opt to dine in.
Deepa Sud, CEO of Plum Jobs, said there is a greater shift towards recruiting experienced senior personnel with specialised and technical capabilities.
"Many of the lower-level roles have been eliminated from businesses for two main reasons – firstly, companies have realised that they do not need those roles, especially as many businesses have downsized and/or restructured and secondly cloud systems and automation have made roles redundant," she said.
There is also a greater demand for technology specialists, though this is not necessarily related to the pandemic but due to a significant rise in technology-based solutions.
She noted that the job market would improve, but it will take a while.
"The world has changed dramatically and every aspect of our lives has changed, so it is not surprising that we will not see local hiring reach 2019 levels again in the near future…Business leaders and investors will have to manage their costs more conservatively, resulting in many roles being redefined or eliminated because of technology or less face-to-face interactions with customers and suppliers," added the CEO of Plum Jobs.
As a greater number of people are vaccinated, Sud sees people becoming more optimistic and confident in stepping out again. This augurs well for the economy and the job market.
Mayank Patel projects reopening of the countries after the pandemic and the UAE's strategy to tackle it have resulted in new job listings in areas like travel, leisure and hospitality, as well as remote work and technology areas.

UAE-US tourism to boom with new Emirates flights to Miami
The new route has the potential to generate $275 million in revenues.
Emirates Airlines’ first-ever passenger service between Dubai and Miami can generate an estimated $275 million in revenue, said officials at the Miami-Dade County aviation department.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said that the new direct route between Dubai and Miami would play a role in pandemic recovery by boosting tourism and commerce.
“We’re thrilled to finally welcome Emirates into our community,” said Cava. “We’re looking forward to seeing the important economic impact the four weekly flights will bring to the county, which will expand options for our residents as a result.”
Dubai’s flagship airline celebrated the inaugural flight of its four times a week service when it touched down in Miami, Florida, at 11 am EST on Thursday, July 22. A water cannon salute welcomed the Emirates flight EK213 at the Miami International Airport.
Starting this week, Emirates will operate four flights per week between Miami and Dubai with the Boeing 777 Game Changer aircraft.
Speaking at the gate event after the inaugural flight, Cava said: “Over the last 16 months, we have had great growth at Miami International Airport. Our tourism industry is making a robust recovery after the pandemic. This (Emirates Airlines) launch symbolises that we can, and we will rebound, stronger than ever.”
Meanwhile, the Miami Dade county commission chairman Jose Pepe Diaz said having a direct flight will benefit the trade and cargo sectors between both cities as well. Since 2019, Emirates SkyCargo, the airline’s freight division, has moved more than 7,700 tonnes of cargo in and out of Miami.
Emirates US operations on path to recovery
Along with Orlando, the new service to Miami provides an additional access point to and from Florida and expands Emirates’ US network to 12 destinations with over 70 weekly flights. The airline has resumed passenger services to over 120 destinations, and by the end of July, it will have recovered close to 90 per cent of its pre-pandemic network.
“It also links travellers from Miami, as well as Southern Florida, South America and the Caribbean to over 50 points across the Middle East, West Asia, Africa, Far East and the Indian Ocean Islands via Dubai,” said Essa Sulaiman Ahmed, divisional vice president (DVP), USA and Canada.
“Miami is a destination we have wanted to serve for many years. Our studies show the route has immense economic viability,” said Ahmed.
He explained: “We have been looking at new ways to tackle the pandemic, which industries are opening up. And our research has shown that travel demand is highest among leisure travellers and those wishing to visit their families. However, demand from the corporate and SME sectors is also increasing gradually.”
“We are confident that our new flight will help boost tourism and commerce, and we look forward to contributing further to the local economy and supporting the surrounding region’s economic recovery,” he added.
According to Ahmed, “there is no doubt that we are going through one of the toughest phases in aviation; however, today’s event is a testament to our commitment to recovery through partnerships.” The DVP hopes that the service will be popular with customers seeking new experiences as countries like the UAE and the US advance their vaccination drives.
Ahmed also said adequate facilities had been put in place to provide medical aid to visitors from the UAE if they contract Covid-19 while visiting the US.
Rolando Aedo, chief operating officer of Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, told Khaleej Times: “Over the past year and a half, we have worked closely with our partner hotels, restaurants and convention halls to mitigate risks of Covid infections every step of the customer journey. Massive investments have been made not just in infrastructure, but also in staff training.”
New route will benefit Miami’s post-pandemic tourism, trade economy
Emir Pineda, manager of aviation trade and logistics with the Miami-Dade County aviation department, said the route is estimated to generate at least $275 million in revenue.
“The industry generates $25 billion in totality and 70 per cent of all our visitors come through this airport,” explained Aedo.
“Whenever you have a carrier like Emirates coming online, it generates significant incremental activity and not just for people looking for leisure, but for those looking for business opportunities, meetings and conventions, which are key for economic development.”
Aedo also said that the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau looks forward to collaborating with Emirates Airlines to make Expo 2020 a success.

India-UAE flights resumption subject to federal government decision: Emirates official
'It is difficult for the airline to state a conclusive final date for end of travel suspensions'
The decision to resume India-UAE passenger entry is subject to federal government regulations, a top Emirates airline official has said.
It is difficult for the airline to state a conclusive final date for the end of travel suspensions, according to Emirates chief commercial officer Adnan Kazim.
“It is difficult to ascertain a final timeline on when flights would reopen between India and the UAE. It depends on the federal government’s mandate. However, work is in progress and there is an obvious eagerness to open up this route for travellers,” he added.
The senior official was responding to a question posed by Khaleej Times as he addressed the media ahead of Emirates launching its first ever passenger service to Miami on July 22.
Inbound travel from South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have been suspended since April this year. Thousands of expatriates stranded in these countries have been desperately waiting to return to their jobs and families. Many are attempting to travel into the UAE by undergoing quarantine in a third country for 14 days.
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) had recently said in a circular that inbound passenger travel from a total of 16 countries to the UAE will remain suspended until further notice.
Among the countries covered by the advisory are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Indonesia, Liberia, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Uganda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Zambia.
In a safety decision circular, the authority had said: “The current development on the Covid-19 pandemic leads the UAE to impose new flight and passengers’ restrictions. The UAE government is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates and instructions as necessary.”

Dubai: Emirates has refunded Dh8.5 billion back to passengers since Covid hit
'Passengers have been extended the option to re-book their tickets for the next two years'
Emirates Airlines has refunded Dh8.5 billion worth of tickets in cash back to passengers whose bookings were impacted due to Covid-19-triggered global travel lockdowns.
The refunds to passengers were made seamlessly and within a short period of time, said Emirates chief commercial officer Adnan Kazim.
The senior official was speaking to media ahead of Emirates launching its first ever passenger service to Miami on July 22. The maiden passenger flight took off from Dubai at 3am on Thursday.
Kazim said: “Our refunds are planned in a manner where customers do not lose miles. Passengers have been extended the option to re-book their tickets for the next two years. They can turn existing tickets into a voucher or take open tickets. For us, our customers come first.”
Passenger ticket refunds for Emirates come in three categories: Retaining them as open tickets for 720 days; converting them into vouchers; and cash refunds, said Kazim.
He also said that Emirates is working hard to “bring back the product of Emirates” to its pre-pandemic days.
“From our side, we are working day and night by introducing new innovations to our products. There are a lot of constant changes and it is not an easy environment to operate in. However, we are adamant to bring the airline to how it used to be,” he added.

UAE weather: More rain forecast for Thursday
Temperature to increase gradually.
The weather in UAE will continue to be hot and dusty on Thursday with a chance of rainfall in parts of the country, according to the national Met department (NCM).
The weather forecast for today is partly cloudy in general and hazy at times during daytime, with a chance of some convective clouds formation over some eastern and southern areas - may be associated with rainfall.
The NCM has forecast more rains for today. Temperatures tend to increase gradually.
Light to moderate winds, freshening at times causing blowing dust and sand.
Overall, this week has been good for the UAE when it comes to rainfall. Different parts of the country received rains throughout the week, leaving behind picturesque scenes of gushing wadis (valleys) and rocky, desert terrains coming alive with greenery.
The Abu Dhabi Police have called on motorists to exercise caution while driving amid rainy weather conditions.
Taking to Twitter, the police advised drivers to follow changing speed limits displayed on electronic information boards.
In Abu Dhabi, speed limits are reduced during adverse weather conditions.
Weather is monitored by a ‘smart system’ that will automatically reduce the speed limit on Abu Dhabi roads and highways during rainy or foggy conditions. In the event of poor visibility (when visibility has dropped to less than 200 metres), the speed limit is reduced to 80km/hour.

Wait for Indians travelling to UAE gets longer after it extends flight ban
The restrictions on flyers from these countries are applicable on all types of visas, which means even expats on business visa hoping to return to the UAE would have to wait.
Travellers from major south Asian countries may have to wait till they can travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), after the Gulf nation extended the ban on international flights from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka amid concerns over coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases.
The restrictions on flyers from these countries are applicable on all types of visas, which means even expats on business visa hoping to return to the UAE would have to wait.
The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority had banned inbound flights from India to Dubai on April 24, when the deadly second wave of the virus had literally paralysed the country.
It was followed by UAE's flagship carrier Etihad Airlines, which further suspended its flights from six countries, including India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, since July 18.
It, however, exempted UAE nationals, diplomats and holders of 'Golden Visa' if they produce negative PCT test report while boarding their flights.
Emirates further said flights from India and Pakistan were subject to a "government review" and their resumption would require clearance.
Moreover, even as Etihad Airways, the second flagship carrier of UAE, initially planned to resume its flight operations to India on July 31, there is no confirmation from the government yet.
After Dubai reopened its doors to international tourists on July 7, 2020, it received 3.7 million visitors in the 11 months since then.

New projects to spur growth, boost domestic tourism: Sheikh Mohammed
Multiple infrastructure projects worth Dh1.95 billion inaugurated.
Three new highways have been opened linking various emirates across the UAE, the Ruler of Dubai announced on Monday.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, took to Twitter to share the news as well as several photos.
A series of infrastructure projects worth Dh1.95 billion was inaugurated today with the aim of shortening the distance and transportation time between various regions and emirates in the country.
"We opened a road linking Maliha in Sharjah with Al Shuwaib in Abu Dhabi, and another linking Hatta in Dubai with Masfout in Ajman and the Al-Qour Mountains in Ras Al Khaimah," Sheikh Mohammed explained.
A third road strengthens the link between Al Madam in Sharjah with Hatta Dubai Road, he added.
Emphasising the vision of the country, the UAE Vice-President said, "Infrastructure has been steadily developing since the formation of our country and we will continue building the UAE relentlessly."
The new projects are also expected to facilitate commercial growth and encourage domestic tourism.
“We are constantly seeking to implement new strategic projects that can generate economic value by more closely integrating various regions in the country, enhancing productivity and creating fresh investment prospects, which in turn can bring new opportunities for the country’s people and institutions," he said.
“The UAE remains committed to providing the public and private sectors with the resources needed to accelerate growth and innovation. Our infrastructure initiatives aim to strengthen the country’s status as a global model for sustainable development and provide its people with a quality of life that rivals the world’s best,” he added.
Featuring a total gross road length of 112 kilometres, the road projects inaugurated today include a network of tracks, roads, intersections and bridges in three main axes.
1. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road
The first axis, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road, is a new route that represents an extension of the Sheikh Khalifa Road (E84) leading to the Emirate of Fujairah.
This axis extends from the intersection of Sheikh Khalifa Road with Sharjah-Kalba Road (E102) and continues through the Mleiha area and Al Madam area in the Emirate of Sharjah, ending in the Al Shuwaib area in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The 52 km route has three lanes in each direction, with a design speed of 140 km/h.
2. Al-Watan Road
The second axis is Al-Watan Road, which represents a direct connection route between various regions, with three lanes in each direction, featuring a length of 42 km and a design speed of 120 km/h.
This axis extends from the Hatta area, passing through the Masfout area in the Emirate of Ajman, the Almunaee area and the mountains of Wadi Al Qor in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. It then intersects with the first axis in the Mleiha area in the Emirate of Sharjah.
3. Dubai-Hatta Road
The third axis of the project is the Dubai-Hatta Road, which includes the development and improvement of the current Dubai-Hatta road between Nizwa and Al Madam areas within the Emirate of Sharjah.
It has three lanes in each direction instead of two lanes, at a speed of 120 km/h. The length of this lane is 18 km.
The road includes the construction of an upper crossing for vehicles in the Madam area and two bridges over the Madam roundabout. The project also includes the development of the current lower crossing leading to Al Nizwa area and the construction of four pedestrian bridges in the Madam area.
Shorter travel time
The new road projects will shorten the distance and time between areas.
The second axis, along with a part of the first axis, will shorten the distance between Al Madam roundabout and the Hatta area from 115 km to 95 km, reducing transportation time by 30 minutes.
In addition, the first axis will contribute to shortening the distance between Al Shiwayb area and the Emirate of Fujairah from 115 km to 93 km, which will reduce the journey time by 15 minutes.

Dubai: Delivery riders can't use left lane, cross 100kmph
Fines of up to Dh700 have been specified for violations
A speed limit of 100kmph has been set for delivery riders in Dubai, according to new guidelines issued by the emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The riders must not use the left lane and are not to use backpacks for making deliveries. They are also not allowed to carry another rider on the bike.
The guidelines have been listed in a comprehensive manual that governs the management of delivery services in Dubai.
Fines of up to Dh700 have been specified for violations, with a third time repetition of the violation leading to permit suspension.
Other rules include commitment to wear a certified protective helmet and using authorised spots to park bikes.
Riders must obtain a certificate of good conduct from the Dubai Police. The driver must not be less than 21 years old or older than 55.
The motorcycles they use must not be older than four years from the date of manufacture.
Food safety
Food should be stored in such a way that it prevents contamination through exposure to insects, dust, fumes, sunlight, rain or other factors during delivery.
The outer and inner parts of the box and the areas that are touched by hands must be cleaned and thoroughly disinfected using detergents and disinfectants approved by the Dubai Municipality before loading food.
Food must be delivered in appropriate thermal preservation equipment to maintain continuous temperature control and to maintain food quality.
Compliance must
The manual, which has been developed in coordination with the Dubai Police and municipality, covers all trading establishments and firms that provide delivery services. These include delivery of foods, goods and equipment.
Delivery service companies and their motorcyclists must strictly comply with the guidelines “for the safety of drivers, road users and the food or materials to be delivered”, the RTA said.

Covid vaccines effective against Delta variant: UAE doctors
Vaccination is the best antidote to safeguard against contracting the infection.
Though the Delta strain is a “variant of concern”, UAE doctors have assured there is no need to panic, as Covid-19 vaccines have been found effective against all strains of SARS-CoV-2, which causes the viral disease.
The Delta strain is more infectious and easily transmissible, which has led to its emergence as a variant of concern.
Vaccination is the best antidote to safeguard against contracting the viral infection, doctors advised.
Dr Anjali Bantwal, specialist anatomic and clinical pathology at Burjeel Specialty Hospital, Dubai, weighed in on the vaccines available in the UAE.
She said: “According to recent studies conducted in the United Kingdom, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine seems to be 88 per cent effective against the Delta variant two weeks after the second dose. However, as its effectiveness reduces three weeks after the first dose, it is important to get both doses. Studies are underway to validate the efficacy of China's Sinopharm against the Delta variant and the need for booster shots.”
She cited the United States’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to underscore the reasons behind the growing fear factor regarding the virus.
The CDC has stated that the Delta variant is highly contagious, neutralises the antibodies and reduces the effectiveness of diagnostic tests.
“While UAE residents need to be cautious about the Delta variant, there is no need for panic," said Dr Bantwal. "The best way to protect yourself from the Delta variant is to get fully vaccinated at the earliest. To bolster immunity, one must strictly follow protocols such as wearing masks, maintaining physical distance and washing hands frequently.”
Dr Anthony Fauci, an American physician-scientist and immunologist who is the chief medical advisor to the US President Joe Biden, recently said that Covid-19 vaccines that are being used in America to fight the contagion "are working very well" and do protect against the Delta variant.
Earlier this week, Dr Fauci stated that most Covid-19 vaccines are highly effective against the viral outbreak and urged people to get vaccinated at the earliest.
“The vaccine works. It's free. It's safe. It's easy. And it's convenient,” he said.
Vaccines can reduce mortalities
Dr Ravi Arora, internal medicine specialist at NMC Specialty Hospital, Abu Dhabi, advocated mass vaccination in a bid to ensure zero mortality.
“All Covid-19 vaccines in the UAE do work against the Delta variant. Most vaccines have seen a significant reduction in mortality [the primary intent of any vaccine]. As a result, mass vaccination remains a priority in view of increased infectivity of variants,” he said.
For the virus to die its own death, Dr Arora said, its transmission needs to be halted by maintaining social distancing, ensuring sanitisation and hygiene protocols, and pushing for a mass vaccination drive. “This is exactly what all countries are aiming to achieve. The UAE has led by example for the world to follow suit,” he added.
Dr Wasim Kadri, specialist internal medicine at Prime Medical Center, Sharjah, pointed out that vaccination has helped keep the UAE’s viral caseload at bare minimum, despite the country being a home-away-home to over 150 nationalities from across the world.
“Although the Delta variant is a highly infectious strain and it is fast becoming dominant in most of the countries, the low mortality and the rate of hospitalisation in many countries amongst vaccinated individuals has again proven the need for accelerating vaccination programmes. As per the available data, the UAE is one of the highest vaccinated countries, which reflects in the steadily decreasing number of daily cases,” he said.
He urged the public to sign up for the robust mass vaccination campaign that has been rolled out by the UAE Government.
“All those eligible should take the vaccine as soon as possible. Wear masks and follow the social distancing guidelines to keep yourself, your family and the community safe,” he added.

UAE girl needs world’s most expensive life-saving drug
Even at such a young age, she has already made several visits to the ICUs and emergency rooms.
Six-year-old Arya Pathak, a resident of Abu Dhabi, is suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a life-threatening genetic disease that keeps her in a wheelchair.
SMA affects the motor neurons, or the nerve cells in the spinal cord that controls muscle movement. A viral infection like common cold could lead to breathing problems and an abnormally high heart rate that would immediately land Arya in the intensive care unit.
Even at such a young age, she has already made several visits to the ICUs and emergency rooms and knows by heart all her health issues.
“I have been fighting heart attacks, kyphosis and scoliosis,” said the girl, who suffers from 40 degrees of kyphosis, an increased front-to-back curve of the upper spine, and seven degrees of scoliosis, an abnormal curve of the spine.
Arya was diagnosed with the inherited disease when she was one. And ever since, life hasn’t been easy for her, as the damage to her organs has been getting worse.
She can be cured with Zolgensma — but it’s the most expensive life-saving drug in the world, costing Dh8 million. And this hefty price tag has been pushing Arya to become a scientist one day.
“Why is it the costliest? My parents cannot afford it. I want to make a cheaper drug. I will also make a robot for kids with SMA. So, they will be able to run and play like other kids,” the kid said while sitting in her customised wheelchair.
Arya’s SMA battle has been an unforgettable one for her Indian expat parents Astha Muthoo and Rahul Pathak, who were found to be SMA carriers but without any symptoms.
“She stopped crawling when she was one. In early 2016, type 2 SMA was confirmed but there was no medicine available. We were devastated,” Astha said.
Since 2017, Arya has fought many health complications and spent weeks at the hospital.
“A simple cold would turn into pneumonia. She has issues with swallowing. Food can go into her lungs and cause infection. Her lung capacity is less. While lying down, instead of breathing in, she breathes out. Once she started going to school, there were multiple visits to ICUs, and she was on bipap support. With several visits, at times, doctors struggle to find veins on her hands to give drips,” the mother said, citing a bunch of medical reports.
Astha, who left her teaching job, does physiotherapy sessions to improve Arya’s movement.
“She can’t lift her hands or move her muscles. She can’t stand up even with our support.”
Currently, there are three drugs available: Zolgensma, a kind of gene therapy and a one-time dose, and the other two Spinraza (Dh3.4 million) and Risdiplam (Dh1.7 million) have to be taken multiple times for the rest of her life.
“Zolgensma is our best option, but we can’t afford it. We started a fundraiser in India: www.impactguru.com/fundraiser/help-arya-pathak,” Pathak, a private sector employee, said about the initiative, which has hit four per cent funds in the last 23 days.
A paediatric neurorehabilitation consultant at Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital, in his medical report, said: “I prefer the gene therapy, followed by Spinraza. Risdiplam is the preferred last option. As she has had many chest infections before, there is always the risk that with time, she may become weaker and develop respiratory compromise and become oxygen dependent or lose her ability to feed and swallow. The treatment is a lifesaving intervention before she starts to develop any respiratory compromise or feeding problems.”
According to experts, most children with type 2 SMA survive into adulthood.
All such uncertainties and challenges haven’t stopped Arya from going to school in a wheelchair.
“I am a Grade 1 student at Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Private School. I like to read books. One day, I will walk and play like others,” Arya said, showing a beautiful painting of her in a wheelchair and standing on her feet after getting the drug.
Recent news of kids receiving the drug through successful crowdfunding initiatives gives the family hope, as they race against time to give Arya her dose of Zolgensma.
Astha said: “She keeps watching success stories of other kids who have got Zolgensma. This is a lifesaver. It is approved for kids weighing less than 21kg. She is more than 19 kg. It will be a great blessing if we get this drug. She will stay alive.”

Zul Hijjah moon not sighted in Saudi Arabia; Eid Al Adha on July 20
UAE residents to get a long Eid break this month.
The crescent moon of the month of Zul Hijjah was not spotted in Saudi Arabia on Friday, according to an official Saudi government account on Twitter.
The first day of Zul Hijjah will be on July 11, while July 10 will be the last day of Zul Qaadah, SPAregions tweeted.
Spotting the crescent moon determines the days of Haj and Eid Al Adha, which is celebrated on the 10th of Zul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar.
The Day of Arafat will fall on July 19 this year. UAE residents will have a six-day long break on the occasion of Eid Al Adha.
Earlier, the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Departments of Government of Dubai had said that Arafat Day is to be marked on Monday, July 19, 2021. Therefore, Tuesday, July 20, will be the first day of Eid Al Adha in the UAE.
Based on these forecasts, UAE residents are likely to have a six-day break this month with four-day Eid holidays from Monday, July 19 to Thursday, July 22, followed by two-day weekend on July 23 and 24.
Earlier on Thursday, the Saudi Arabia supreme court had urged Muslims in the Kingdom to try to sight the Zul Hijjah crescent on Friday.

Covid in UAE: Special flights to repatriate stranded Filipinos from Dubai, Abu Dhabi
The special flights are required to have prior approval from the Special Working Group.
Special commercial flights will be operated to repatriate stranded Filipino expats in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, said a top official of the Philippines government.
Harry Roque, presidential spokesperson, said the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) has allowed special commercial flights.
“The IATF authorised the conduct of special commercial flights to bring home stranded Filipinos in Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other countries where there are travel restrictions imposed,” Roque said in a statement.
A Special Working Group (SWG) will be formed to determine the protocols for the special commercial flights, in coordination with the concerned airlines.
“The special commercial flights, which must have prior approval from the SWG, shall likewise be exclusive for Filipinos,” Roque said.
Last month, some 325 Filipinos from Dubai and Abu Dhabi returned home on a Philippines government-chartered flight.
The Philippines has extended the travel restrictions from the UAE, Oman and five other countries until July 15 as part of its Covid safety measures.

UAE: Police record more than 19,000 tailgating violations in 6 months
Motorists who don’t leave a safe distance will be fined Dh400, receive four black points, police warn.
Abu Dhabi Police recorded more than 19,000 tailgating violations in the first half of this year.
Police warned motorists about the dangers of not leaving enough safe distance to the vehicle in front of them as 19,327 violations were detected until June end. Not leaving a safe distance between vehicles has been found to be one of the top reasons for road accidents, police underlined.
“Failure to leave an adequate safe distance between vehicles causes traffic accidents. It results in human and material losses. So, motorists must be careful to comply with traffic laws and regulations to protect themselves and others on the road from serious traffic accidents.”
The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police noted that causing an accident due to not leaving safe distance results in vehicle seizure and Dh5,000 is the fine for releasing it.
The vehicle must be released within three months, failing which, it will be referred for sale at a public auction.
Motorists who don’t leave a safe distance will be fined Dh400 and receive four black points.
The police noted that some drivers harass the motorist in front of them by approaching them at high speed, forcing them to quickly vacate the lane by using reflective light, leading to distraction and serious traffic accidents.

UAE Covid vaccine booster shot: When, how to get one
This is how you can get your Covid vaccine booster shot
The Covid-19 vaccine booster shot will help stimulate immunity, especially against the new strains.
Dr Farida Al Hosani, official spokesperson of the UAE health sector, had said earlier in the week that such booster shots are given in other kinds of vaccines too, just like the seasonal flu vaccine.
“As the health sector follows the best ways to protect society, it was critical to provide vaccines to control the pandemic, including the booster shot, given after the main doses to stimulate immunity,” Dr Farida said during the weekly Covid briefing.
“These shots are provided in other kinds of vaccines, like the seasonal flu vaccine. We recommend that eligible individuals take the vaccines after consulting a specialised doctor so as to protect themselves and support the national effort in combating the pandemic,” she had added.
Dr Gunjan Mahajan, clinical pathologist at the Burjeel Hospital in Dubai said that the booster shot is essential as it will help strengthen the immunity against the different strains.
“The booster dose of vaccine against Covid-19 is required to strengthen the immunity against the different strains of the coronavirus, especially due to spread and emergence of the new mutant strains,” she pointed out.
And while vaccine appointments can be booked through the DHA’s app or through its WhatsApp account in Dubai, residents in Abu Dhabi can book appointments through Seha’s app or by calling the customer service centre.
Dr Mahajan added that the VPS Healthcare group was also offering booster shots in Abu Dhabi.
“Vaccination centres under the VPS Healthcare group also offer booster doses for the eligible groups through walk-ins in the Abu Dhabi region,” she revealed.
Dr Sunil Vyas, specialist pulmonologist at Aster Hospital in Dubai said that the booster shot has been advised based on scientific research and added that two doses of the vaccine may not be as effective against the mutant strain.
“The covid vaccine booster shot has been advised by the UAE as well as other countries based on scientific research and the mutant strains being detected. The reason has been that the two doses of the Covid vaccine might not be as effective to prevent the mutant strain,” said Dr Vyas.
“In Dubai you do not need approval from a doctor, for the booster dose,” he added.
Here is an explainer about the booster shot:
Why does one need to get the booster shot?
The booster shot is required to strengthen the immunity against the different strains of the coronavirus, especially due to spread and emergence of the new mutant stains.
Time frame for the booster shot:
According to the Department of Health (DoH) and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), residents can take the booster shot six months after their second dose. They can choose between Pfizer-BioNTech or Sinopharm. Authorities have advised residents to take one Pfizer shot only as a booster.
Eligibility:
According to the UAE health authorities, residents can take the booster shot after medical evaluation.
How can you get the booster shot?
> In Dubai, vaccine appointments can be booked through the DHA’s app or through its WhatsApp account 800342 by sending “Hi” message.
> In Abu Dhabi, appointments can be booked by calling Seha's customer service centre on 80050, or through the Seha app.
